Steel Creek Campground

The tent sites require a short walk from the parking area. The horse sites accommodate up to six people and four stock animals per site. Flush restrooms and water spigots run from mid-March through mid-November. You'll need to bring your own gear and water outside those months, or dry camp when facilities close.

All sites at Steel Creek operate by reservation only through the National Park Service. The NPS does not allow first-come camping here. You must reserve your dates before arrival. Paddling the upper Buffalo depends on rainfall. Spring and early summer typically bring enough water for boating. Late summer and fall often run too low.

The Buffalo River Trail passes through Steel Creek and connects to day hikes and backcountry routes. Boxley Valley, a few miles away, has Lost Valley Trail. This easy-to-moderate walk features geologic formations. You can combine river access with trail time in one trip. The nearest town is Ponca, three miles west on Highway 74.

Road and weather conditions can shift fast in the Ozarks. Call the Tyler Bend Visitor Center at 870-439-2502 before you go. Confirm current water levels, facility status, and seasonal closures.
