The area is designed for wildlife viewing and non-motorized recreation. A 32-mile segment of the North Country Trail runs through the property. The trail is marked with yellow posts but is not maintained. You can hike, mountain bike, or ride horses on the trail and throughout the area.
Wildlife viewing is the main draw. The habitat supports a diverse mix of large game, upland birds, waterfowl, and shorebirds. Whitetail deer and moose are present. You may see raptors including red-tail, marsh, and Swainson's hawks. Waterfowl species include mallards, pintails, teal, scaup, canvasback, and snow geese. Shorebirds include piping plovers, American avocets, and spotted sandpipers. Predators like coyotes and foxes also live in the area. Migrant songbirds pass through seasonally.
The landscape is native grassland and wetland. This terrain can be wet and muddy depending on recent rainfall and season. Bring appropriate footwear and be prepared for changing conditions.
This is a BOR-managed site with developed amenities. Access and overnight camping rules differ from typical BLM dispersed areas. Contact the North Dakota Game and Fish Department or the Bureau of Reclamation office before arrival to confirm current rules. Conditions and access change.
