The campground operates first-come, first-served. You can camp only within the designated campsites, not in the day-use parking areas. Two vault toilets serve the property. Potable water outlets are scattered throughout the grounds. The site includes horse corrals and facilities for staging horseback riding trips. A group shelter with water and electricity is available. Reservations are required for the shelter, so contact the camp host directly.
Occasionally the BLM rents the entire campground for special events and permits. When this happens, the public receives notification by news release. Contact the Roswell Field Office if you need to confirm whether a Special Recreation Permit applies to your planned use.
Fort Stanton NCA surrounds the campground and has 73 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Trails wind through open meadows and canyons with views of the Sacramento and Capitan Mountains. Most trailheads are accessed from the Rob Jagger's area. You'll find hitching rails and water for animals there. The Rio Bonito Petroglyph National Recreation Trail is a 2.1-mile loop. It leads to Petroglyph Rock with etchings from the Jornada Mogollon people. Cross-country travel on foot and horseback is allowed throughout the NCA. Mountain bikers should stay on marked trails.
For group shelter reservations or campground questions, call the camp host at 575-322-0030. The Roswell Field Office can be reached at 575-627-0272 for other information. Verify current rules with the BLM office before arrival. Conditions and access change. Data verified May 2026.
