Overview

Atlantic City/South Pass is a developed BLM camping area in Wyoming centered on 19th-century mining and trail history. The BLM allows camping for up to 14 days in any one camp area on most of its land, so you can stay longer than at many private spots if you move between locations.

The area sits in high-elevation terrain where you can drive or ride graveled and two-track roads through pine and aspen forest. You'll pass near the ghost town of Miner's Delight and the South Pass City State Historic Site. The Fort Stambaugh Loop Road covers 11 miles and connects several historic points. Wildlife sightings are common here. You'll see pronghorn, deer, elk, moose, and raptors moving through the landscape.

The region's appeal rests on its role as a major crossing point during America's westward expansion. South Pass itself was discovered in 1812. It became the main overland route to the Pacific that Lewis and Clark had searched for. Between 1849 and 1852 alone, roughly 150,000 pioneers used the pass and connected trails. The Pony Express ran through here for 19 months in 1860 and 1861. An estimated 500,000 people traveled the South Pass trail system before the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869. They headed to Oregon, the Great Salt Lake region, California, or other destinations.

Roads in the area are maintained but graveled, so conditions can vary. You'll need a vehicle suitable for unpaved surfaces. The high elevation means weather can change quickly. Plan to bring supplies, as services in nearby towns can be limited.
