American Falls Reservoir

The lake holds rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout plus crappie, perch, and catfish. Rainbow trout in the 5 to 6 pound range are common catches here. The site has a developed campground with restrooms and picnic tables. Four boat ramps provide access for fishing, water skiing, and windsurfing. A visitor center sits at the dam with exhibits on Shoshone and Bannock culture and the dam's construction history.

You can swim, canoe, or picnic at multiple shoreline locations. Swimming and fishing happen year-round when water levels allow. The reservoir's elevation and water storage fluctuate daily with irrigation demand. The Bureau of Reclamation and the city of American Falls jointly manage the site.

Most developed camping areas charge a fee. You check with the American Falls Reservoir office for current campground availability and rates. Reservations may be required during peak summer months. Water levels drop substantially during irrigation season, which can affect boat ramp access.

The main issue here is water level swings. Winter drawdowns for irrigation can strand boats and shrink the fishery. Call ahead during spring and fall to confirm the reservoir has enough water to sustain the trout population. Low water years can close the fishery entirely.
